We just had Valentine’s Day, a commercialized holiday (that I totally feed into – give me all the flowers) about romantic love so let’s talk about SELF LOVE. Why? Because I am a firm believer that you have to love yourself to have a fulfilling life. One of the best ways to see what you love about yourself and explore that is to write yourself a love letter.
How to write yourself a love letter:
Get out some nice stationary, your go-to notebook, or just grab the old spiral leftover from second grade. Type it out on your phone or your computer.
That’s all well and good right but the next question that inevitably comes up is ‘how exactly do I start this letter?‘ Here are a few prompts to get the creative self love juices flowing:
- list or talk about your best/favorite personality traits
- think about the positive ways you’ve changed (or not changed) over the years
- what are the things you’ve done that you’re most proud of
- explain why your body is amazing
- describe what sets your soul on fire and why
- what are you good at
- write why you love your life
Remember that you don’t need to share this letter to anyone! Because this letter is just for you that means you can write down all the things that you might be embarrassed to say out loud or tell other people. Write it all down. Just write it! Even if you think it’s insignificant or it’s “too small” of an achievement write it down!
Some of those prompts might not get the words flowing but start with the one that speaks to you the most and go from there. Cross things out, rewrite things, and try not to go to a negative space. This is a LOVE letter. Think about how your mom or your best friend would talk to you and write with their loving words. Or hey, think about how the drunk girl in the bar restroom once told you why you were amazing and use that vibe!
Reread this letter for a confidence boost if you need one or keep it in an envelope and never open it. It’s up to you because it’s all about the process of writing yourself a love letter. The process and thinking about why you love yourself is what this is about!
Going through the process of writing this love letter to yourself is great for your mental health. Think of this as giving yourself a huge compliment!
