Building a work wear capsule wardrobe can be difficult – where to start right? Especially if you’re trying to do all this on a budget you want to be smart with the purchases you make.
When you’re building your first wardrobe it’s easy to think that tossing a blazer over an outfit will make it work appropriate but it’s not. It can work for some items but pass if the blouse or dress is low cut, made for going out, or too casual. Don’t grab the skirt or dress if it’s above fingertip length and if it’s juuuuust fingertip length then rethink, chances are it’s too short.
This is an update of last years post about a work wear capsule wardrobe. You can get more outfit inspiration there too! I plan on adding a few pieces each season so you can continuously update your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Remember that picking pieces should be based on your budget and quality of the pieces. I still have suit blazers that have lasted years and blouses that I will wear until they wear out because I choose quality and purchasing one blouse instead of two or three.

These 20 items make up over 29 outfits! Plus switch up the heels you wear with each outfit or how you wear the scarf or button up/tie/open the cardigan or take off/on the blazer and you’ve got a bunch more. I know this might seem “simple” or “boring” but to start off with you don’t need much. You can find these pieces at different price points but my ride or die suits have always been from J Crew. When you find a suit that fits you well, buy the entire four pieces: blazer, skirt, pants, and dress. The blacks will match and having the entire suit gives you so many options.

Here is one month of work outfits that don’t look like you’re pulling from the same 20 items. These obviously all have the same underlying color palette so it’s easy to mix and match. Plus, when was the last time you looked at your coworker and said “I think you wore that last week!” Never right? Especially when they’re basics.
