Where do you start building your work wardrobe when you’re just starting your career or transferring from a casual workplace to a more business professional workplace? Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered with this work capsule wardrobe.
When you are starting from scratch on a business professional wardrobe it can seem intimidating, especially when you don’t want to drop hundreds of dollars on a wardrobe that’s only going to see the inside of an office. Good news is that you’re never really starting from scratch – you can always use some of your current wardrobe to pull for your new work wardrobe. Even if you’re a college student chances are there are at least some tops in your closet you can toss a blazer over and it becomes okay to see the inside of your workplace.
I’m about to show you that if you’ve got 16 pieces you can create a solid work capsule wardrobe that will get you 33 outfits! That’s over a MONTH OF OUTFITS! Plus these pieces, with an influx of what’s already in your wardrobe gets you a really start for your new job!
Start by picking your base color: black or navy. I recommend black because everyone needs a black suit and you should have a black suit before you have a navy one. But when you have the resources to buy a navy suit please do, because I love em.
After you’ve got your base color chosen you need to check off these 16 pieces for your work capsule wardrobe. Remember all of these need to work with your base color – so if you choose black stay away from picking a navy top.

Shoes and accessories aren’t included because I’m assuming you have at least a pair of heels. All you need is a solid pair of your base colored pumps and some simple jewelry to start off with and build from there. You can use jewelry, shoes, scarves, belts, or hair accessories to change up even the simplest of looks. A black dress with an open cardigan looks completely different than a black dress with a buttoned cardigan and a belt. See how I switch the same items up for work.
