Some of you have asked what I usually wear for trial – this suit is a perfect way to show you what I’d pick to wear for trial. I’m particular about what I’d wear for trial and my usual picks are, no surprise: suits! But there are some very good reasons for that.
Honestly, what I wear for jury trials tends to be boring; why? Because the focus has to be on the case and not me. I’m just the way the truth and story gets to the fact finders (the jury). If they are focusing on any part of my wardrobe: blazer, shoes, nail polish, hairstyle etc then I’m not doing my job. The most ‘wild’ I get during trials is a print on my shell under my suit or a textured dress under a blazer.
I usually stick with suits for trials: I tend to start with black and let my suits get progressively lighter as the week goes on. But I won’t ever go lighter than light grey. White suits are not appropriate for criminal jury trials, nor is this pink suit I love. If the trial is more than a week then I start mixing and matching – a black blazer over a grey dress for example. I can barely feed myself during trial weeks, let alone get to the dry cleaners. Maybe TM will be able to help with this hmmm…
This rigid preference for suits is only because of two things: 1) I try criminal cases and 2) they are being presented to juries. If I was in a civil litigation case or if the criminal trial was being tried to a judge, my reliance on suits wouldn’t be as heavy. I would feel comfortable throwing in different jackets and colors into the mix.

Now let’s talk about legs – there are still some judges and some prosecutors (male and female) who staunchly believe that women need to wear only skirt suits and they must be wearing panty hose. When I interned with the US Attorney’s Office I frequently visited such a courtroom. Now, I don’t wear them. Ever. There are some attorneys at my office who do and I refuse. Thank goodness there aren’t any judges who require them in my county.
I love this Tahari suit because it accentuates my curves but it also offers some leeway – it’s belted but skims over my stomach which I love. The belt is wide and hits perfectly. This particular color is currently sold out BUT Tahari ASL restocks frequently so give it a month or so and check back. I’ve linked some other skirt suits above so you can get the same look right now.
Something I’ve come to realize over the years is: suits are EXPENSIVE. There have been many times where I’ve considered getting a bespoke suit made because then you can know it’s going to fit perfectly, you don’t need to alter/hem anything, and you can make sure you love the color and fabric. If I ever pull the trigger on that I will let you know!
