Maybe this will shock you or maybe it won’t, but my thoughts on wearing jeans at work are the same as my feelings on Ron and Hermione getting together at the end of Harry Potter…
I’M NOT A FAN. (#dramione for life)
I love a good pair of jeans. Give me a pair with stretch that are long enough for my legs and I will wear them out. Just not at work. Maybe it’s a product of my workplace – I can’t walk into a courtroom in jeans and expect a judge (or a jury for that matter) to listen to what I’m saying.
Think about it, if you showed up to a trial and the prosecutor or defense attorney was wearing jeans what would you think? You’d think – wow my tax dollars at work or get a new attorney bro. I hesitate to walk into a courtroom without a blazer let alone talk on the record without one. Jeans are out of the question for me at work.
Before the pandemic and lockdown we were allowed to wear jeans on Fridays if we didn’t have court, even then I never wore jeans. Ever. After lockdown started and our office shut to the public, our dress code relaxed. I still couldn’t bring myself to wear jeans. I started finally wearing jeans to the office in January of this year and I think that was the worst decision. It felt so nonchalant and casual that I just felt blah. I won’t be doing that again; they were comfortable but my jeans will be forever regulated to the weekends and after work.
Be Nicer to Jeans Katherine!
Okay okay, now that you know a law office or a courtroom are NOT appropriate places to wear jeans (unless you’re ON the jury) let’s hear my thoughts about work places where jeans ARE appropriate… well there’s not a lot. The only places where jeans are okay is if your office dress code is Casual or Business Casual.
Tips for Keeping your Jeans Work Appropriate
Business Casual – keep your jeans dark with no rips or tears. Stay away from “fashionable” jeans ie: bell bottoms, high-waisted, button front, super skinny, etc. Keep it straight legged or not skin tight skinny.
Casual – “regular colors” ie: blue, light blue, black etc. Stay away from acid wash or similar. Don’t show too much skin and keep any rips minimal. If your hand can fit through a rip it’s too much. Take your cue from your boss when they wear jeans in this type of work place.
