Most of us glorify being “busy” and having lots to do. It makes us feel worthy or like we have our act together. Being busy might sound nice but it can really take it’s toll on you…
If you actually have a lot to do then great, you actually are “busy” (and I hope you’re good at prioritizing) but if you’re adding things, events, tasks, and activities just to fill up your time you definitely need to take a step back and learn how to say no.
There’s a difference between going going going and being productive (and a difference between a to-do list and a life checklist). You know those kid bath toys that swim in circles but never actually get across the tub? Don’t be those toys. Stop adding things to your plate just to have a full one. You want to be productive at work, not simply busy – the goal is to get things accomplished.
When you’re busy you run the risk of multitasking which just increases the chances of mistakes. Single tasking and focusing on each item on your to-do list forces you to slow down and confront being busy.
Adding things to your list so you can stay busy could be a way you’re coping with stressors or trauma in your life that you haven’t confronted yet. Have you had a recent loss, experienced low morale at work, or are you working in a toxic work environment? You could be trying to fill your time instead of feeling your feelings. Take a mental health day and schedule time to talk to a counselor. It’s rough the first time you cut back on being busy but it is ultimately the best thing for you.
If you focus on being busy you’re not focusing on yourself. Your body and brain can’t take being busy all the time; you need to slow down and give yourself time to breathe. If you really want to add things to your to-do list try adding: meditate, read a book, take a nap, or sit in silence for 10 minutes. Take a break from being busy – you’ll thank yourself later.
Are you a “busy” person? What do you think about being “busy”?
Let’s discuss!
PS I don’t always wear booties at work but I can’t help myself in the fall. These suede booties are chic and give off all the fall vibes. Plus, if you’re commuting they’re waterproof so you can trudge through the weather!
