We talk a lot about our go to outfits and the basics we love to repeat. For some it’s a pair of slacks you grab all the time or maybe the cut of a dress that you have multiple of. A work “uniform” can be described as an outfit that you know works for your body, makes you feel good when you wear it, and is something easy enough for you to pull together when you’re running late.
For me it’s black ankle pants, a black or white tank, and a colored blazer. It’s easy, it’s simple, and the color blocking looks good on me, it highlights my waist and the colored blazer pulls your eyes to what I think are my best qualities and away from what I’d like not to emphasize.
I had a former colleague who had approx 15 sheath dresses in multiple colors that she would rotate through. She rarely wore slacks, but give her the cut of dress she loved and she would wear that every day.
Look through the outfits you gravitate towards and I mean the ones you actually wear. I love a good sheath dress but I don’t wear them regularly because ya girl has curves and I would rather they be skimmed than hugged. Take stock of what is in your closet right now – do you like skirts more than dresses? What kind of skirts: aline, pleated, pencil? What about slacks: cropped, wide leg, full length?
I like focusing the purchasing power of my paycheck mostly on my work uniform – I will buy a new colored or textured blazer over a new pair of pants any day. Give me my favorite work pants and a new blazer and I’m a happy girl.
