Reading is my sport of choice. I love new books, old books, ebooks, real books, fiction and non, romance, sci-fi, you get the picture. There are books I read over and over and here are some of them…
I figured during this time of technology and wifi reliance there might be some of us who want a break from everything and just want to take their peace in between the pages of a book.
While I gave you my favorite time killing apps and websites these books I read over and over are a different (and I’d say more fun) way to spend your quaran-time. Or a relaxing way to spend an afternoon when we can all go out and read in parks again. Reading is a just one way I’m taking care of my mental health during this crisis.
There’s currently a stack of about 20 unread books on my nightstand and I’m sure at least that many packed in boxes waiting for spots on my bookshelves in my (yet to be determined) new home. Even with all of those books just waiting to be opened sometimes I go back to some old tried and true loves.
It’s the opposite of returning to an ex – these books are never a bad idea.
So get ready for a long post, but here are the books I read over and over:
For the One who Likes History Museums
The Five Families by Selwyn Raab is for you. It’s a detailed and immaculately researched history of the Cosa Nostra in America. This book spans decades of history of the Mafia and discusses the possible resurgence of the mafia.
For the One on Bumble RN
Check out the Beautiful Series by Christina Lauren. (or anything by them honestly) There are five books and four novellas and they are all good! These are romance novels for the modern women who aren’t afraid of reading about strong women who know what they want. Read with a glass of cool water because these are h-o-t!
For the One who knows who Katniss & Tris are
Get your dystopian fix with the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. There are enough books in this series to get you through a couple days or a couple weeks – depending on how fast you read. Aveyard does a great job of laying out the RQ world and connecting you to these characters. There is a reason these books have a cult following. I read them one at a time, since I had to wait for them to be published and the wait between Book 2 & 3 almost killed me. Then Book 3 ended and the wait for Book 4 did kill me.
For the One who Watches CNN all the Time
Grab Tell Your Children by Alex Berenson – it a well written and well researched book about the correlation/causation between marijuana use, mental illness, and violence. It’s based in science and does a great job of giving the reader all aspects of the research.
For the One who can Name all Five Tudor Wives
Download all three books in The Bolyen King Trilogy by Laura Andersen. Imagine if Anne Bolyen wasn’t beheaded and Henry Tudor had gotten his dearest wish: a son who lived to adulthood. I’m usually not one to like “what if” historical novels but I’ve reads these three multiple times. There’s also another trilogy asking what if Elizabeth had a daughter and it’s just as amazing.
For the One who knows what SCOTUS stands for
Read Conversations with RBG by Jeffrey Rosen. RBG and Rosen discuss everything from her favorite dissents, the #MeToo movement, and how to lead a compassionate life. RBG has a killer answer for everything and it feels as if you’re having a conversation with a friend… a friend who is an American hero and more than lives up to her nickname Notorious RBG.
For the One who Loved Nancy Drew
Read everything Tasha Alexander has written; but especially the Lady Emily series. You like lady sleuths who are smart and sassy? Lady Emily is your girl. She studies Greek and solves murders. These mysteries aren’t ones that you can figure out from the get – which makes reading them more entertaining.
For the One who like Mages, War, and Courtly Intrigue
Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith is for you – this is an “old” book – published in 1997 it, like all good writing, stands the test of the years. There are technically two books: Crown Duel & Court Duel but you can buy them together in one book, which I recommend. This was a well written fantasy novel that isn’t “too fantasy” if that makes sense. I return to this book quite often.
For the One who Woke Up Early to watch the Royal Wedding
Start The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan. It’s got major Kate and Willis vibes but more party than below the knee skirts. Oh and in this one, our ‘Kate’ is American – just keep punching up the drama. Another books – The Heir Affair – is coming out this summer and I’ve already pre-ordered it. Finish The Royal We so you can be ready!
For EVERYONE
Put your nose in Harry Potter and don’t stop until you love it. I love love love Harry Potter – it will always be a favorite series and have a place in my heart. I have a HP tattoo and I’ve never regretted it. If you’ve never got the hype I suggest you give it a try – you’ve got the time right now.
Alright. Yall have enough books recommendations to last you for the entire year! Have you read any of these? Which ones are you going to read?
