Many of you lovely ladies will be starting internships this summer and there are two opposing forces that will be present in you: 1) You want to make a fabulous impression and 2) You don’t exactly have hundreds of dollars to drop on clothes. You know you cannot walk in looking ragged and look like you tried to make bar hopping clothes business appropriate.
Here are your must haves for your summer internship. Don’t worry, you won’t break the bank buying them, and I bet you can scrape at least some of them up from your closet. PS when scraping things up from your closet make sure there isn’t any cleavage, your upper thighs aren’t showing, and your heels don’t have a platform.
Must Haves
1. Black Suit: pick one in a nice fabric that won’t wrinkle easily. You can get away with wearing this as an entire suit, pair the blazer with the skirt mentioned next, or just wear the pants. 3 outfits. Easy. Give this a good run at the dry cleaners every so often…
2. Black Skirt: pick one in a fabric that at least goes with your suit fabric because then your blazer will actually match.
3. Black Pumps: comfy enough to not kill your feet and yet high enough to look good
4. Colored Dress: stick with red, cobalt blue, burgundy, grey, or hunter green.
5. Colored Pants: same colors as above
6. Two White Shirts: long sleeve button down and a short sleeve top
7. Two Colored Shirts: pick short sleeve tops instead of shells. Shells fit better under blazers but you can wear tops with sleeves without a blazer which gives you more outfit options.
8. Simple Jewels: choose pearls or small diamonds first. If the earrings hurt your ears they’re probably too big, if you can see your necklace from across the street spend your money on the three other necklaces you could have gotten for that price.
9. Classic Bag: I carried a Longchamp bag for my first internship and it was great but Target also has some really nice looking faux leather bags right now: go for the black or red.
If you stick to a wardrobe that is more black than brown it cuts down on what you need to buy. If you stick to ‘black’ you can keep your black pumps, black bag, and you don’t need another blazer.
Extra Credit:
10. “friday” dress: this is what you throw on for fridays when your thursday night choices turn out to be not so hot but you still need to look put together
