HI friends! Let’s talk about wearing booties at work – every fall when it looks like we might actually get some cold weather I pull out my booties and want to wear them all the time. It’s relatively easy to style them for the weekend but for the office it’s more difficult. Difficult, but not impossible! I’m going to share my four tips for styling booties at work.
In addition to looking like fall on your feet booties are also a killer commute shoe. If you have wet, snowy, or cold commutes then wearing booties to work (and on your commute) are the answer to your concern. My feet get COLD in my office during the winter and booties keep them cozy and looking cute! Yes, I get cold in my office… in TEXAS. Don’t ask how I survive skiing or trips to visit family Minnesota! Check out how I styled a pair of black suede ankle shaft booties last year and then this year how I styled a pair of black leather booties (these are the booties on the business casual row all the way to the right).

Here are my picks for booties you can wear at work! They’re parceled out by dress code: casual, business casual, and business professional. You can click on each bootie to shop it!
- stick with darker or neutral colors – if you’re in a business professional work place stay with dark tones, I wouldn’t go any lighter than coffee with a splash of milk. Booties are already a less dressy option than heels so you don’t want to rock the boat too much. The only time I’d go super light is if the dress code is casual.
- keep the toes pointy – the rounder the toe, the less dressy the booties look. A round toe is appropriate at some times but not in all dress codes. If you’re more of a round toe girl then I’d make the shaft of the boot higher. I wear tall boots at work but that’s a whole different post! Nothing above your knee though!
- pair them carefully – at work pair your booties with a skirt/dress or long pants. Ankle pants with an ankle shaft on the booties does not pair well. The thin line of skin you inevitably see between your booties and your pants is not appropriate. You either want zero skin (long pants) or a good amount of skin/tights (dress/skirt).
- watch the heel – the heel height needs to be what your dress code calls for in your regular pumps. The texture of the heel on your booties at work needs to also match your dress code. See how the heel texture in the above picture matches the texture of the booties except for in the casual dress code? When they differ, it becomes less dressy.
