Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a tireless pioneer for women’s rights in her 87 years. She fought for you, for me, for men, for all US citizens; and she quite literally devoted her life to justice. May her memory be a blessing.
I don’t care what your political leaning is – the United States lost a crusader in the form of one 5’1″ woman with a penchant as big for decorative collars as it was for dissents. What RBG did, stand up for what she believed in and fought to help others, is what every person should aspire for themselves.
Here are my 9 favorite RBG quotes – to inspire a new generation of heroes
“My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.”
“Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.”
“Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.”
“If you have a caring life partner, you help the other person when that person needs it. I had a life partner who thought my work was as important as his, and I think that made all the difference for me.”
“I don’t say women’s rights—I say the constitutional principle of the equal citizenship stature of men and women.”
“Dissents speak to a future age. It’s not simply to say, ‘My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.’ But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that’s the dissenter’s hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow.”
“Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
“When I’m sometimes asked ‘When will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court]?’ and I say ‘When there are nine,’ people are shocked. But there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.”
“Feminism [is the] notion that we should each be free to develop our own talents and not be held back by manmade barriers.”
While I don’t have a child (nor do I have any plans for one in the near future), I cannot wait to teach them about RBG and strong women who stand up for the rights of others.
RBG used her words and gave her life fighting for the rights of others – what else describes a hero?
Below are a few RBG purchases I’m about to add to my closet and wall. I might buy a RBG onesie for those little heroes I hope to raise and some art to add to my office.
